DAY 5

DAY 5

Last night Brazilian Olivera beat Oscar Pisrorius in the 200 metres last night being 10 metres behind at the corner onto thr straight and then he ran like someone I hadn’t seen. I think he will do very well in the 100 metres. It was a complete shock to everybody’s system as Oscar accused Olivera of cheating he took it back a while later but the paralympic committee did agree to Olivera using the blades before he ran.

As I watch the power lifting it confuses me. How can someone lift so much weight in their arms and still need the use of a wheelchair All of that strength and power in the arms but none in the legs it does not make sense. Another question is where does it stopthe waste, legs or stomach

Sharon Vennard was beaten in the quarter final of the woman’s individual recurve archery event. She lost by 71-63 to third seed Yan Huilian of China on in the Royal Artilary Barracks Saturday also Eilish Byrne finished fifth in the individual Para Dressage

EQUESTRIAN

Wicklow’s Helen Kearney secured Ireland’s first medal in equestrian as she got a silver medal with a score of 76.7 on her horse Minister Cool

Eilish Byrne finished fourth in equestrian indivudial freestyle grade 2 in Grenwich park.  Byrne rode her favourite horse Youri and got a personal best of 75.25 however it ended in heartache as German Angelika Trabert nicked the bronze at the end.

Sophie Christianson of Great Britain won equestrian in the individual dressage 1a and Sophie Wells and Pinocchio won grade 4

ATHLETHICS

In the men’s discus F35/36 Albin Vidovic of Crotia hit a massive throw of 36.2 metres to get gold. Just behind him was Duane Strydom of South Africa who threw 35.54 metres to get silver and the bronze went to Paulo Souza of Brazil

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

In the first match of the day Canada completely controlled the match against Colombia as they won the match by 68 points to 42. In the first 2 periods it was like Colombia went there as Canada won them by 21-8 and 21-16 respectively. In the third Colombia did improve defensively as they lost the third by 13-4 but Colombia did win the fourth by 14 points to 13. I did hear that Colombia did beat Canada in qualifying but with a result like this even I would not believe it.

In the second match Great Britain’s women and Canada won two periods a piece. The problem was the two that Britain won were close and the ones in the middle that they lost they lost badly in. After the first period we all thought that Britain was in with a chance as they won it 16-14. Then Canada took control with a 20-9 in the second and 21-11 in the third. Britain did manage to get into the fourth quarter as they won it by 14 points to 12 but by this stage it was all over. Britain does go into the quarter finals but will play the team on top of the opposite group.

In the third match Great Britain’s men played Japan and they took control of the match from the start as they won the first quarter 25-14 the did allow Japan more into it as the quarters progressed in the second they won by 21 points to 10 and the third by 14 points to 13 it seemed like their energies were running out. They lost the final quarter by 18 points to 11. They still did win the match quite comfortably by 71 points to 55.Britain are hoping for Poland to do them a favour tonight as they play Germany if Poland win Britain will finish second.

7 A SIDE FOOTBALL

Great Britain disappointed against Ukraine today as they lost by 7 goals to 1. They had to replace their goalkeeper to keep a points balance because an outfield player was injured near the end. Ukraine does look good to win a medal.

In the second match Iran defeated Argentina 8-1 and if you look at the second half on its own you would think this was a close match as Iran won 2-1 but in the first have Iran had control and made it count as they won it by 6 goals to 0

POWER LIFTING

In the woman’s 67.5 class Souhad Ghazouni of France attempted a world record of 148 and failed but managed to get 145kg and Paralympics record. Yuaio Tai of China got the silver with 139kg and Victoria Neji of Nigeria got the bronze

In the 146 kg PowerlliftThe bronze medal with a lift of Tuz Hui Lin but the big tussle was between Nigeria’s Fulashade Oluwfemiayo who broke a world record but could only manage sliver and the winner Fu Taoying who represents China but the difference between silver and gold was the fact that Ying was lighter in body weight. When they both lifted the three weights they were level but the rule does say that the lighter person does win in that circumstance. Taoying is now the first person male or female to get 4 Paralympics gold medals in four different weight categories.

SITTING VOLLEYBALL

Great Britain lost to Germany in straight sets but at one stage in the final set they were very close at 12 points each but Germany did het control and won it 25-15. Britain will be hoping for Russia to get a set as that would bean Britain would go through to the quarters where they will meet either Bosnia Herzegovina or Iran

SWIMMING

Britain’s Ellie Symons gets a gold and breaks her own world record that she achieved in qualifying this morning with Verena Schott of Germany coming second and Natalie Jones of Great Britain coming third Jones lost a silver by 1 one hundredth of a second how cruel.

Great Britain missed out on medals as their swimmers finish 4th and 5th in the Menes 100m Freestyle S7 Hyun Pan from china won the gold and Matthew Levy won the silver while USA got the bronze with Lantz Lamback
In the mens 100 metre breaststroke SB11 Bozun Yang broke a world record to get gold and another Aisan Keichi Kimura got the silver and Ukranes Olekandr Maschenko got the bronze
In the Womans breaststroke SB11 Maja Reichard from Sweeden got the gold in a world record time. Yana Berezhna from Ukrane got the silver and Nada Baez from Argentena gt the bronze

My athlete of the day is Ellie Symons as she broke the world record in both qualifying and the final
