Day 6

DAY 6

This is a link that some of you may find interesting please tell me what you think as I hope to look at it later. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01m1jqd/The_Best_of_Men/

As Kelly Holmes said on TV today wheelchair middle distance racing can be quite dangerous as you have your tactics from the start and you are boxed in trying to move on a corner or coming behind a racer or going 1 on one on 1 very close an accidents can and have happened

Wheelchair tennis is played in Eaton and not Wimbledon, this is because Eaton is specially built for the Paralympics to their needs. It is a quality sport to watch. Yes the ball bounces twice but I don’t think that harms the game. One thing that wheelchair tennis does not do but that regular professional tennis players do is grunt when then strike the ball. Is there any need for this grunting? How come you do not see this in other sports?

Peter Norfolk from Great Britain better known as the quad father will not defend his crown as he lost out to Weinberg an Australian this morning. Norfolk did win the first set 6-3 but lost loosing the second 7-5 Weingerg didn’t loose a game in the third winning 6-0 to secure a quarter final spot. One of Norfocks was that he hit 12 double faults

Another Brit Dave Phillipson lost 5-0 6-2 to Japanese player Shingo Kuneda

Archery- There are ways to level and tune an archery bow. One bow is magnified which means it makes it easier for you to see the target. There are 2 different types of bow one is shorter and one is heavier.

ATHLETICS

Last night Michael Mc Killop cruised to 1500 metres victory in the T37 Class. He established himself as the greatest Paralympics middle distance runner of all time. He was so far ahead of the runner up, Brad Scott of Australia, he decided to wave at the crowd.

Mickey Bushell, Team GB, blew away the rest of the field to win the T53 100 Metres. The Shropshire wheelchair racer 21 made a brilliant start and powered away to finish in 14.75 seconds.

In the men’s long jump F11 for blind athletes Russian Katyshev won the gold medal. I do find it interesting how the long jump is done for F11. First you have a guide (helper) control then he lets you run with the aid of another guide shouting at you to tell you to come closer into a metre of chalk which you must touch. Then you jump. You are allowed out of the lined area but you must touch the chalk. The distance is measured from where your foot hits the chalk.

5 A SIDE FOOTBALL

Did you know that there are 50 minutes in a 5 a side soccer match?

Brazil beat China by 1 goal to 0 in what I think is a fair result. Brazil had most of the game but China did have their chances. Girvinio scored a beautiful goal to separate the sides. Brazil will now go into the semi finals and China is hoping For France to loose.

Spain and Argentina drew 0-0 to put Spain into the medal matches. Argentina have had more of the possession and more set plays to work off but Spain were able to hold them and keep a clean sheet as their defences were both solid and tight.

The gods must be against Great Britain today as they lost 1-0 to Iran. Iran had not scored a goal in the tournament until this match. The issue was the fact that they missed 4 penalties. Dave Clarke had the best chance from open play running at defenders and testing the goalkeeper. If they had won this match by 2 goals or more they would have reached the play offs

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

Australia controlled their quarter final in the first 2 quarters leading 21-10 and 23-10. Mexico did not seem to be in the game at all in the third quarter they shocked the Australians by winning a poor third quarter by 9 points to 6 in the fourth. Australia showed what they could do again by winning a close quarter by 12 points to 8 winning the game by 82 points to 37 and showing their potential for a medal. Mexico still have a chance to get 5th in the classification medal.

In the second quarter final the Netherlands came out strong against the Chinese winning the first quarter by 13 points to 6. China won the second quarter by 13 points to 8 and you thought that this would be a good game but in the second half the Dutch took control winning the third 18 – 10 and the fourth 20 – 8 it was like China were dying quickly in the second half as the Dutch were getting stronger and stronger.  Final score the Netherlands 59 China 37 the Netherlands were going into the semi final. The Chinese will be dreaming of that first half when they go into the fifth place play off.

SWIMMING

British swimmer Heather Frederickson won the gold medal in the woman’s 100 metre backstroke s8 with USA star Jessica Long getting silver and Russia’s Olesya Vladkina with the bronze.

In the men’s freestyle S6 Irelands Darragh Mc Donald had a bad day as he finished last. Gold went to Qing XU of China silver to Lorenzo Perez Escalona from Cuba and bronze to Tao ZHeng of China

Ellie Simmonds got her third medal of the games with a bronze in the S6 50m freestyle, this was a PB for her.

Team Ireland- In Grenwich Park Helen Kearney won a bronze in the eventing (equestrian) today, adding to her silver medal which she won on sunday.
